The National Campaign

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

Tahoe Truckee Reads is one of more than 130 communities participating in the national Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.

The Campaign is a collaborative effort by foundations, nonprofit partners, states and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship.

The Campaign is based on the belief that schools must be accountable for helping all children achieve. This means schools must provide quality teachers and effective teaching for all children in every classroom every day. But schools cannot succeed alone. Ensuring the academic success of children from low-income families will require a focus beyond school. It will require engaged communities mobilized to remove barriers, expand opportunities, and assist parents in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities to serve as full partners in the success of their children.

The Challenge

Reading proficiency by third grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success. Yet every year, more than 80 percent of low-income children nationwide miss this crucial milestone.

The goal of Tahoe Truckee Reads is to ensure that all children in our community are reading proficiently by the end of third grade. We want our children to have the tools they need to be successful in life.
